Useful information for fly fishing on the beck for trout and sea trout
A fly rod of 8' 6” or 9', middle to tip action, rated for lines 5/6 is ideal. We recommend a fluorocarbon leader for wet fly fishing of approximately the length of the rod and of around 4lb breaking strain. For dry fly fishing a slightly shorter nylon leader is preferable of approximately 2.5lb breaking strain. Nylon floats and fluorocarbon sinks so the choice of leader is a natural one according to the type of fly you wish to choose.
If fly fishing when sea trout are in the river it is essential to use a leader of sensible breaking strain (we recommend 8-10lb fluorocarbon). The sea trout in the beck can run to over 10lb and are very strong so to fish with anything weaker is pure folly.
Suitable flies for fishing in rivers of this area are listed below:
Dryflies: Iron blue Olive, winged Pheasant tail, blue hackle Grey duster, Greenwells Glory, Tups indispensable, Ginger quill, Black knat, winged Blue quill, Caenis, Mayfly
Wet flies: Olive, winged, Greenwell spider, Partridge & orange, Black spider, Black & peacock spider, Mallard & claret, Black knat, winged Turners beetle, Teal blue & silver (good fly for sea trout), Peter Ross (good fly for sea trout), Connemara black (good fly for sea trout).
Nymphs: Pheasant tail, Olive, Shrimp patterns, weighted Buzzers, Mayfly, Goldheads.
The flies listed will catch trout and sea trout in Scalby Beck throughout the season and under different conditions but, as always, it is up to the angler to decide what fly is appropriate at any one time.
